In 2015, the United Nations announced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda includes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create a more sustainable world, covering issues such as health and welfare, gender equality, and ocean/land protection.
For the Kaohsiung Main Public Library (KPML), reading is the first step in the journey to a sustainable life. With this in mind, KPML is holding the "SDGs Sustainable Development Keep Going" book exhibition to participate in this global effort.
The “SDGs Sustainable Development Keep Going” book exhibition is focused on displaying various reading materials on current issues that encourage readers to ponder and explore the meaning of sustainable development.
At the same time, KPML is also holding a book exhibition on "Gender, Equity & Human Rights," which aims to push readers into adopting a wider variety of perspectives and starting dialogues on gender equality. The book exhibition will be held alongside the 2021 Openbook Awards with the hope that it will be able to provide readers with the deep and meaningful reading materials that they require.
The "SDGs Sustainable Development Keep Going" book exhibition is held on the third floor of the Kaohsiung Main Public Library. Plans for the exhibition were not only centralized around the UN's 17 SDGs but also Taiwan's own 18 Sustainable Development Goals.
The book exhibition includes seven main themes, which consist of the following: "Lifestyle: Sleep Well, Eat Well, Be Healthy"; "Education: Small Steps to a Peaceful and Fair World"; "Environment: Saving Our Earth," "Daily Habits: Cultivating Habits for a Sustainable World"; "Work: Great Jobs, Great Results"; "Nation: Working Together to Create A Better Earth"; "Living: Together in Harmony, Humankind in Unity." The library staff is responsible for selecting 138 books, and indicators for sustainable development are displayed in the exhibition venue. Through visual design and arrangement, readers would be able to understand the true meaning of sustainable development and how to achieve it in their daily lives.
KPL will continue to hold various events and activities to fulfill the sustainable development goals. An example of such events includes the City Lecture Room, which is centralized around the concept of SDGs 4's quality education and advocacy for lifelong learning. Storytelling Training for Volunteers is another example. The activity is based on the targets listed under SDG 5, including gender equality and women empowerment. It is open for female new immigrants and provides participants the opportunity to learn handicrafts and storytelling.
Taiwan does not simply strive for international recognition but also to contribute to the earth as a member of the global society. This will and determination have led to the formulation of the 18 TSDGs based on the UN's own 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It is hoped that the 18 TSDGs, also known as the 18 Sustainable Development Goals for Taiwan, will lead our people to create a more sustainable nation for all.
