【Kaohsiung】Registrations for various activities that will be held during the “2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival” are officially open. Set to begin on November 9, the incoming 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival will feature nearly a hundred activities with the theme of “sensory reading.” These activities include book exhibitions, markets, speeches, mini salons, and special programs held for three weekends from November 9 to 24 at various venues, including the Kaohsiung Main Public Library, City Wind Books, Century Asia Cinema, Phalanity Digital Technology’s immersive theatre, and T3 Bistro. The Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) encourages citizens to partake in this year’s Kaohsiung Reading Festival, where they can spend their free time visiting book exhibitions, attending speeches, watching movies, enjoying outstanding cuisine, and experiencing immersive reading.

When remarking on the tridimensional connection between words and real life, KPL Director Chin-Yang Lee pointed out that the objects and events human senses and minds encounter often lead us to new reading pathways that bring the words on book pages to life. 2024 marks the third year of the Kaohsiung Reading Festival, an event promoting freedom and imagination when reading becomes unrestricted by time and space. To create a satisfyingly immersive experience targeting the participants' five senses, venues, including immersive theatres and bistros, will be equipped with projectors, LED wall screens, interactive equipment, and motion-sensing technology. The organizers have also designed plenty of other activities and agendas to introduce more diverse reading experiences for readers. KPL encourages citizens to visit the Kaohsiung Reading Festival on the weekends in November, where they’re sure to discover a world beyond their imagination.

Most of the activities during the opening week will be held on the main stage. Singer Ariel Sha, author Sharky Chen, artist Yu Han Lien, Kaohsiung-born Saoxia, and Dami Huang will attend the event to share touching and comforting stories with the audience. Justin Su, who won the Best Taiwanese Male Singer award in the 35th Golden Melody Awards, will also return to Kaohsiung to perform. Other special guests for the opening week include NibunChorus from the Ligui District and the widely popular VM Theatre Company members, whose shows are often sold out. And, of course, fans of Manzai comedic shows should take this chance to see the BL Walk duo perform at the event.

Penned into the agenda on November 9 is “The Beginning of I’m Serious,” a speech by YouTuber I’m Serious, known for his skills in sculpting large-sized installments and art engineering. The YouTuber will use his humorous and exciting style to provide more understanding of the ins and outs of the industry. Khan Lee, a Taiwanese director with years of experience in the movie industry, will present a speech on his mission of documenting Taiwanese culture and history through movies. With the theme “Sincerity and Truth: From Movies to Stage Performances,” his talk aims to encourage Taiwanese audiences to develop critical thinking habits.

In addition, Kaohsiung-based group Takaocomedybay, which has gained many comedy-loving fans in the city, is set to perform a stand-up comedy show and improvised stage play at the T3 Bistro on November 9, adding some spices to our daily lives. People who register to attend the show can receive a cocktail to sip on and enjoy as they watch Takaocomedybay’s performance.

A sharing session for the newly published Stand by Yourself has been scheduled for 7 PM on November 16 at the Kaohsiung Main Public Library. The book narrates some of Bowie Tseng’s newest growth and realizations in her life. Kurt Lu, an advertising director, poet, and novelist; photographer Sean Lee, who is currently collaborating with SonyTaiwan; and Ean Chen, a photographer collaborating with Canon, will also share their experiences at the Kaohsiung Reading Festival. Photography fans should take this opportunity to learn from these experts.

There is also Podcaster GK Papa, who initially wanted to tell stories to his daughter. He never expected that the storytelling channel he created for that purpose would end up touching the hearts of so many other children. The stories he tells are joyous and paired with music. Aside from classical fairytales, his podcast channel covers different topics, such as daily educational content, popular science, and self-identity. For these reasons, his channel has gained much love from children and has become the parents’ go-to child education resource.

Five new book-sharing sessions will be held on the last week of the Kaohsiung Reading Festival. Ying-Tai Lung, Podcaster GK Papa, and picture book author Corn Chen will be present at the Kaohsiung Main Public Library. Meanwhile, Chazel Chen, Badai, and Kai-Lun Lin will meet book fans at City Wind Books. KPL welcomes all readers interested in the creation of stories and the art of writing to register and participate in the activities of the Kaohsiung Reading Festival.
