【Kaohsiung】 The Kaohsiung Public Library’s (KPL) International Picture Book Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Established alongside the new Kaohsiung Main Public Library, the International Picture Book Center is a cultural landmark that has accompanied the growth and rise of picture book reading in Taiwan.

The Center has grown its collection from nearly 120,000 picture books in 15 languages from 28 countries to 160,000 in 34 languages from 51 countries. Also known for organizing exciting events, the International Picture Book Center has created spaces for picture book lovers, authors, and experts to engage with each other through the “Picture Book Sprouting Talent Fostering Program” and “Picture Book Salon.” These efforts have carved a place for the Center as the best representative of picture book libraries in Taiwan.

“The International Picture Book Center has done more than collecting wonderful picture books in the past ten years. It has also become a crucial platform for creating and promoting picture books,” KPL Director Chin-Yang Lee remarked. “With our rich collection of picture books as the base foundation, the Center has continuously expanded reading circles, especially focusing on reading activities for citizens of different ages. Now, picture books are not simply children’s reading materials. They have also made their way into the hearts of adult readers.”

Director Chin-Yang Lee further emphasized that the events held to celebrate the Center’s 10th anniversary are a form of appreciation for its achievements during the past decade. She spoke of the Center’s dedication to organizing more events for picture book readers of all ages, determined to yield more and better results in the future.

To celebrate the Center’s 10th anniversary, the “International Picture Book Center Party Time” is a series of ten events consisting of four exhibitions centered around the theme of “Time,” which are meant to showcase memorable moments during the Center’s operations, including two speeches based on the theme “Generation,” aimed to discuss the changes of contemporary picture book reading and four “Commemoration” events to establish new connections between the Center and readers.

For the first celebratory event, KPL invited Apple Theatre to give an interactive performance of picture book stories. Apple Theatre is a theatre group based in Kaohsiung with rich experience performing stage shows for children. Their performance at KPL attracted many families who watched and participated in the merriment. “I felt like one of the story’s characters when I went along with the performers!” said one participant. “Thank you for holding such a wonderful event, KPL! Having the theatre group perform helped increase children’s interest in reading while enabling us to experience the charm of picture books as a family.” The audience, consisting of adults and children, was completely mesmerized as they listened to the story. The event was full of warmth and excitement, further nurturing their love for picture books.

The 4th floor of the Kaohsiung Main Public Library currently displays the fourteen picture books published through the “Picture Book Sprouting Talent Fostering Program" as part of the celebration. Meanwhile, the Picture Book Plaza on the Main Library’s B1 floor hosts the “10th Anniversary Exhibition of the International Picture Book Center.” The exhibition venue has been designed to mimic the shape of giant books, displaying mementos of memorable visits from guests to the International Picture Book Center. These special guests include picture book authors from the US, UK, Japan, and nearly a hundred Taiwanese experts. The special exhibition showcases the guests’ autographs, drafts, work collections, and images from their visits to the Center. KPL welcomes all citizens to visit the exhibition and learn more about the Center’s efforts and accomplishments during the past decade.

“The Picture Book Plaza used to be empty, but now it’s become a world of picture books and fairytales!” said one visitor. Another exclaimed, “Wow, this is the draft of Little City Hero that I’ve always wished to see!” Yet another visitor said, “I attended that Japanese picture book author’s storytelling event before!” KPL has even launched a “Gift for Post” activity for this event to encourage citizens’ participation in the celebration. Citizens may post a picture of themselves at the International Picture Book Center on social media to win a special gift, available for only a limited time. In addition, they will also have the opportunity to participate in the lottery and win a variety of limited-edition merchandise from the International Picture Book Center! KPL invites citizens to visit the exhibition, recall their fond memories with picture books and libraries from the past decade, and share this exciting celebration with friends on social media.

The events currently being held for the Center’s 10th anniversary are not simply a celebration of the past but also the mark of a new beginning. The International Picture Book Center will continue pursuing its initial aspirations to promote picture book reading. By holding a wider variety of activities for readers of all ages, the Center hopes to bring more joy and excitement into their lives.

The “International Picture Book Center Party Time” will run until February 16, 2025. KPL cordially invites picture book lovers of all ages to partake in the grand celebration, becoming a part of the Center’s history and future journey ahead.
