【Reported from Kaohsiung】 A significant milestone in the history of Kaohsiung City, the year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the harbor city. As part of the celebrations, the KPL Youth Board proposed that a unique program be included in the 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival. Knowing that the Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) has established branch libraries across the vast territory of Kaohsiung, the board members suggested releasing a seal stamp collection book with a city map.

For this activity, 61 unique seal stamps have been placed at the Kaohsiung Main Public Library and other KPL branch libraries. During the Kaohsiung Reading Festival, citizens can earn a 100 NTD book voucher at the service counter on the first floor of the Kaohsiung Reading Festival after collecting three seal stamps. Open for citizens and international tourists alike, the activity offers an opportunity to travel and explore Kaohsiung, taking participants on a journey to discover the many faces of a city surrounded by mountains and the sea.

Director Wen-Tsui Wang from Kaohsiung City Government’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs remarked that KPL is the first library to be operated as an administrative legal entity in Taiwan. Establishing the KPL Youth Board is a huge step forward for KPL in cultivating the next generation's talents. In addition to increasing participation among youths in public affairs, the Youth Board builds a platform for communication and exchange between public libraries and the younger generation.

KPL gathers youths of different ages, providing them a platform to express their observations on society, explore their interests, and voice out their inner thoughts. The Youth Board’s “Stamp Collection” activity allows one to explore Kaohsiung during its centennial celebrations, encouraging citizens and tourists to visit institutions of knowledge and cultural hubs across the city.

KPL Director Chin-Yang Lee pointed out that the 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival differs significantly from its predecessors as members of the Youth Board assumed more significant roles in designing and planning library activities. Holding a seal stamp-collecting activity reflects the slogan “Now Loading,” which is the theme of this year’s Kaohsiung Reading Festival. Aside from illustrating the architectural characteristics of 61 libraries, the seal stamps commemorate artworks from rural areas or pieces of local history and culture, offering multiple paths for readers to bask in the charisma of the harbor city. The activity leads participants to explore the city in previously unimaginable ways while crafting a reading blueprint unique to Kaohsiung.

During its second and third years, Jian-Jhong Wong, a KPL Youth Board member, expressed that designing the “Main and Branch Library Stamp Collection Map,” in addition to new experiences and observations on the branch libraries in different districts, aims to reach several objectives. Aside from connecting KPL with local communities, the KPL Youth Board also hopes to revive the functions of libraries and reading materials and establish the characteristics and illustrated visualization of branch libraries.

Jian-Jhong Wong expressed his happiness at the chance to work alongside his fellow KPL Youth Board Members. After numerous sessions of intense planning and discussions, the board members completed the designs of the Stamp Collection Book and 61 seal stamps, finalizing their activity just in time for such a historical event as Kaohsiung City’s 100th anniversary. The members received help and guidance from the KPL main and branch library staff throughout the process.

“Harbor City Reading Tour: Main and Branch Library Seal Stamp Collection” has officially begun at the Kaohsiung Main Public Library and other KPL branch libraries and will run throughout the “2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival” until November 24. Citizens can use their seal stamp collection to participate in lotteries for a limited time. Alternatively, they can exchange their seal stamps for book vouchers. Citizens can also consider playing the “Transmigration Reading Station” AR game available at the Heti and Caoya Branch Libraries and the 4th floor of the Kaohsiung Main Public Library, where they can earn three seal stamps simply by completing the game. Putting the three seal stamps together will form a full, complete illustration.
