Kaohsiung youth is making headline with their amazing literary creativity! Liao Yu-hsiang and Ou Shao-chi, two winners of Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award took away the Grand Prize (0.3 million NT) and the Second Prize (0.15 million NT) of the 2019 TSMC Youth Literature Award in the short novel as well as the poetry category.

Liao Yu-hsiang suspended her studies at Kaohsiung Girls’ Senior High School and is currently studying at home. Her first submission won the Top Prize of the 2018 Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award in the Age 16-18 Poetry and Prose categories.  This year, she also took home the top prize of the 2019 TSMC Youth Literature Award in the Short Novel category with a prize money of 0.3 million NTD. At last year’s award ceremony, Ms. Liao mentioned that she submitted her entry because she was convinced by a library staff and she was very surprised to win the award, which is a confidence booster for her. Meanwhile, Kaohsiung Senior High student Ou Shao-chi also won the Second Prize of the 2019 TSMC Youth Literature Award in Short Novel category and the Grand Prize in New Poetry category. Mr. Ou was the dual winner of the 2017 Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award in New Poetry category and Prose category. Upon winning the award, Mr. Ou mentioned that he hopes to be seen and heard through his literary works.

Liao Yu-hsiang won the 2018 Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award in the Prose Category and New Poetry Category. Both of her works described her taking a stroll along the Love River observing people on the streets. Huang Shin-en, one of the judges for the Prose Cateogry pointed out that Liao’s winning entry was full of vivid, delicate, fluid and rhythmic words and that “all the common people on the street became meaningful and specific characters under her pen.” Her work was like a real tour, which allowed readers to experience the sights and sounds of Kaohsiung.

With a prize money worth 0.543 million NTD, Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award is able to discover new and emerging literary stars every year. This year’s theme is “Nonfiction: Real Phenomenon of Creativity,” which tries to explore the concept of “if works are unreal and our lives are real, then what kind of role should a writer play?” In this year’s promotional video, the organizer tries to combine documentaries and narrative films by inviting writers to talk about their creative concepts and source of inspiration so writers could act in their own winning work.

In the promotional video, Liao Yu-hsiang demonstrated an easy yet impressive method of her creativity – by posting her sentences on sticky notes. She then arranges the sequence of her sticky notes when the floor is full of them. The reason why she is doing this is because she believes that “poetry has more freedom than other forms of writing. Just like ocean, the density and concentration of water may vary depending on where one is located. Likewise, creativity can be reproduced and restructured.”

These Kaohsiung youth use their unique literary sense to record their daily life and allow their creativity to liberate youth. Each of their writing can allow others to look at the same city from a different perspective, which is the ultimate goal of the Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award.  Entry for the 2019 Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award is accepted until September 27 (Friday). Two new categories are available this year:  16-18 Short Novel and Picture Writing. Promotional video (click here); Official website (click here).
