The Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library won the Yuan-Ye Award in June of this year. Then on July 17, the library also took home the FIABCI – Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards. This has been a year of harvest in terms of honors for Kaohsiung Public Library. It is also a recognition for Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library after going through a lot of struggles in the initial stage of of construction. The library will organize a series of celebration events between August 2 and 4. Please come and join us for a fun weekend!

The Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library was the last piece of puzzle for Kaohsiung City to build one library in each district of the city. The library opened on August 2, 2018 and its architectural design incorporated ecological environment with humanities while paying tribute to local architectural style. After several rounds of reviews, the library received two prizes from the FIABCI – Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards: the special prize in Best Construction Quality Category, and the gold prize in Best Planning and Design Category.

The FIABCI – Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards are considered the highest recognition a construction project can receive in Taiwan. Nonetheless, the library encountered various obstacles during the construction stage, and many organizations showed concerns regarding how the ecological environment at Central Park may be affected by such project. The construction team made several design changes throughout the building process such as reducing building height and overcoming construction difficulties. Eventually, the one-and-only park library in Kaohsiung was completed without cutting any tree while preserving the ecological environment of the park.

According to Kaohsiung Public Library, the construction of the Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library was a long journey. It is not an easy feat to overcome all the construction obstacles and win the top construction prizes in Taiwan.

This month marks the first anniversary of the park library. To show our appreciation for the patronage and support we received from our visitors, the library will host a series of celebration events. From August 2 (Friday) to August 4 (Sunday), visitors will be able to participate in activities such as cold brew coffee sampling, private tour with the library chief architect, kid’s events featuring giant bubble show, clown, and balloons.  Furthermore, on August 2 at 7pm, a quartet concert will also take place outside of the library. Please come and join us in celebrating the first anniversary of the Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library.

Interior design at the Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library focuses on the element of tree, shade, and leave. Since its architectural style matches with the park’s forest, many visitors appreciate the beauty and comfortable environment provided by the library, as if one is enjoying a relaxing time at a café. Many library volunteers are retired civil servants, who work hard to make sure the library is running smoothly. The library also organizes various children and ecological events. For example, the event on insects and reptiles in June was fully booked within one minute after the start of registration, and more than 100 people eventually showed up at the event. Another unique feature of the library is its collection of 40 “integrated toys” that allow people to play together with exceptional children.

According to Kaohsiung Public Library, total number of visitors to the Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library has reached 350,000, with an average of over 1200 visitors per day. It is the library with the highest number of visitors among all branch libraries in Kaohsiung. In addition, the number of books borrowed as well as the number of borrowers are also some of the highest. Many visitors came all the way from Zuoying and Xiaogang District, which shows that the library meets the demand of residents from the surrounding areas. From its inception to completion, Kaohsiung City Government and Kaohsiung Public Library have listened to the voice of residents and endeavored to overcome difficulties. The addition of the Li Ke-Yong Memorial Library to the KPL System symbolizes the final piece of puzzle in the city’s desire to construct a library at every district.
