KLP's First Picture Books Sprouting Award Winning Picture Book Published

The Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) has paid attention to the development and creative power of original picture books produced in Taiwan. In order to foster more new picture book talents, KPL launched a "Picture Books Sprouting Award" to cultivate and support picture book creation talents. The first Picture Books Sprouting Award had selected three winners. Each winner received NTD 200,000 to fund their picture books creation, as well as matched publishing opportunities and book purchasing funds. After over a year of hard work and waiting, the first original picture book, Let's Play in Mud was officially published in April 2021.

"Picture Books Sprouting Award" has two categories, the master award and the novice award. Let's Play in Mud, the first master award winner, is authored by Zhang Xiu-yu who has published over three picture books prior to this. Zhang, once an elementary school art teacher, excels at applying multiple media and printmaking techniques to create local stories in Taiwan. Zhang's works were awarded Jury's Special Recommendation in

Hsin-Yi's Children Literuature Award and shortlisted for Golden Tripod Award and Feng Zikai Children's Picture Book Award. Zhang, once again, incorporated traditional culture, Taiwanese landscape, humanistic care into this latest publication.

Compared with translated picture books, Taiwan's original picture books have added elements such as the creators' personal experience in life, the environment where they grew up, and collected memories that move the readers. Jian Mei-ling, deputy director of Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government (KCG) mentioned that picture stories in Let's Play in Mud applied simple ways to introduce Taiwan's profound and valuable "pottery art" to children. The book not only showcases old pottery masters' craftsmanship, but also includes knowledge regarding snake kiln and potter art. The hand-painted prints combine a variety of reticulate patterns and display rubbing textures, both of which present the playfulness and creativity of earth tones. With the guidance of stories and pictures, children are drawn closer to the traditional art and culture.

Zhang Xiu-yu, author of Let's Play in Mud will lead the parent-child workshop in KPL on May 22, 2021. Pottery and print lovers cannot miss this workshop. Picture Books Sprouting Award will publish its second and third book this summer. KPL will continue supporting the creation of Taiwan local picture books, hoping that more people will see the light of Taiwan’s picture books.
