Kaohsiung Public Library's (KPL) "Books in a Bag" activity was warmly welcomed by citizens of Kaohsiung. Within 108 seconds when the activity kicked off, all 100 boxes full of books were reserved. Many readers expressed their wishes for KPL to add more children's books as children's books are in high demand during the summer vacation. KPL has thus decided to add another 100 boxes for the second week of the activity. In total, the Library will prepare 100 boxes of children's books and 100 boxes of regular books. In other words, citizens will have 200 boxes of books to borrow from the Library.

Restriction measures that have been put in place during the pandemic have prohibited library patrons to enter public libraries, so KPL's "Books in a Bag" activity was unexpectedly popular among citizens of the city. Many civil groups, such as Po-Jen Hospital, Wen-Chin Hsu Cultural and Education Foundation, Wishlessness Study Group, and National Cheng-Kung University Alumni Association of Kaohsiung have all supported KPL with more social resources, which enable the Library to supply more books.

Restriction measures right now have made it impossible for public libraries to provide in-person services, so the library has chosen to make it easier for patrons to get books, even though KPL has to bear the cost to prepare and deliver the books, said Acting Director Yi-Cheng Lin. KPL is particularly grateful for all the support it has received from all the sponsors.

"Books in a Bag" activity offer books of different genres, including life, health, literature, art, picture books, and more. Many books are suitable for family reading. Those who are interested should apply online and each applicant can only choose one box. After applicants have made their choices on the event website, filled out their information, and sent out their applications, KPL will deliver the books to applicants' homes within a week. Within each box, readers will find seven books and a book bag. The online application is open at 12 noon every Saturday and 200 boxes are available per week. Each individual is allowed to apply once a month. The book boxes can only be delivered to the greater Kaohsiung area. After reading, readers can use self-service book drop machines at the Main Library to return the books, or they can drop the books at the branch library closest to them. They can also choose to mail the books back to the Main Library at their own cost.
