A benchmark of its kind
The International Picture Book Center located on the first basement floor of the new Main Library incorporates systematic collection and provides more comprehensive reading education integrating pictures with language in making the visual and literary art of picture books part of the lives of the citizens of Kaohsiung, in addition to expanding multiculturalism. The center also assists in picture book related research, and creates a platform for interaction between picture book artists, teachers, and the public to inspire imagination and give birth to local picture book talent. The center is being established as Taiwan’s largest scale international picture book center with a global perspective.
Spatial Planning
The center’s collection is comprised mainly of excellent picture books from countries across the globe, and is divided into sections of Taiwan, other Asian countries, and Europe & America, with each section being designed based on picture book representative content and illustrations. The center’s picture book display differs from traditional layouts; books are displayed according to prizes they have received, theme, and author. It also collects electronic picture books which provide interactive opportunities for children. In addition, a small exhibition space has been set up to introduce various picture book creators and works of various genres at regular times. The space takes Kaohsiung’s maritime and natural ecology as its theme, with flowing natural lines and vibrant colors, to create a fun picture book reading space. In addition to book shelves, the center’s interior possesses computers for searches, a picture book display area and a multifunctional study room.
