Caoya Branch of Kaohsiung Public Library Won “Aging Together Award” in Selection of Age-Friendly City

The Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) competed for "2022 Taiwan Healthy City and Age-Friendly City Award Selection-Aging Together Award" from Health Promotion Administration, the Ministry of Health and Welfare with "Your Reliable Neighbor: Kaohsiung Public Library Dedicated to Senior Service and Long-Term Care". It was recognized by the judges after written reviews, oral reports and on-site visits, and became the first local public library to receive the award.

 

Since 2020, Kaohsiung City's first Library Dedicated to Senior Service and Long-Term Care" has signed a memorandum of understanding with local professional medical institutions, such as Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital. and Yuh-Ing Junior College of Health Care & Management. Through the expertise and resources in culture, medical care, and education, such as: Taiwan Holistic Care Service Association, Kaohsiung Chen-Kang-Yuan Community University

, Kaohsiung Municipal Cianjhen Junior High School Extension School, 55 Senior Book Club, Si Wan College at National Sun Yat-sen University and Childlike Art Classroom. The library strived for resources from the central government, connect with resources from other industries, and link with community-based organizations to create a comprehensive and sustainable local service network for the elderly and an age-friendly society, echoing the SDG 11 initiative "Sustainable Cities and Communities".

 

This year, a total of 361 organizations from 22 counties and cities across the country submitted for the awards. Caoya Branch of KPL purchased sewing machines in conjunction with local development to turn the library into a "creative space for the exchange between youth and the elderly. It also purchased additional board games to train the brain and the hands for the elderly and to facilitate intergenerational communication. Video magnifiers, height adjustable reading tables, lift assist chairs and other elderly assistive devices are useful tools to promote reading habits. In addition, Siaogang Hospital and Yuh-Ing Junior College of Health Care & Management provide basic health, physical fitness measurement equipment and diagnostic tools for dementia.

 

Director Wang Wen-tsui of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government's said, "In 2018, Kaohsiung City entered an aging society, and in 2025, it is expected to enter a super-aging society. KPL, which has become an administrative corporation, continues to carry out the mission of a public library, and manifests the spirit of innovation and active service by building a model library for aging services at Caoya Branch in Cianjhen District to implement the library's community care function and make Kaohsiung an age-friendly city.
