Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) is committed to promoting reading equality, focusing on the needs of all ages and diverse ethnic communities. Therefore, KPL actively collaborates with private enterprises and foundations to integrate resources to synergize efforts. This year, KPL and Compal Electronics joined forces once again to support rural reading activities in remote areas including Liou-Guei, Jia-Sian, and Tian-Liao areas. Also, before the summer vacation kicked started, Compal Electronics had already donated books for elementary school students to the iReading Games Zone of the Mi-Tuo Branch.

Director Wang, Wen-Tsui of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government expressed her gratitude to collaborate with Compal Electronics, a major laptop and smart device manufacturer in Taiwan with a long-term commitment to providing reading resources in remote areas, for the 3rd consecutive year. This year, the collaboration will be taken to the next level by organizing local walking tours, mobile libraries, storytelling performances by theater groups, and AR environmental education games in Liou-Guei, Jia-Sian, and Tian-Liao areas. These activities aim at combining technology education with local charms and ecological conservation, providing diverse reading experiences for rural students, and bridging the urban-rural divide.

With the summer vacation just around the corner, there is a significant increase in demand for borrowing books. In response to this, Compal Electronics has donated some high-quality reading materials to the iReading Games Zone of the Mi-Tuo Branch Library. Through KPL’s extensive borrowing service, Compal Electronics’ generous donation will benefit not only local students in Mi-Tuo Branch but also those in neighboring communities, including students in Nan-An elementary school, Shou-Ling elementary school, and Mi-Tuo elementary school. This donation gives students access to books regardless of their location.

Deputy General Manager, Ding Chang-Jie of Compal Electronics mentioned that reading education is precious and should be made easily accessible. After learning that experts carefully chose the books in the iReading Games Zone, he considered this donation extraordinary. He hopes this initiative will inspire others to support the cause. This philanthropic project brings resources to rural areas and promotes social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

Acting Director of KPL, Lin Yi-Cheng emphasized that integrating library and corporate resources builds a strong knowledge bridge that reaches rural areas. During the two-month-long summer vacation when schools are closed, libraries become the primary go-to place for parents and students to access learning materials. KPL appreciated Compal Electronics' heartfelt support and collaboration in the past three years so that resources could be integrated and distributed across various areas. The initiative allows students to have a more diverse learning experience and mitigate learning loss during the summer.

Students of Nan-An Elementary School attended the launch of the iReading Games Zone of the Mi-Tuo Branch, presenting surprising and presidential-level bamboo storytelling in Taiwanese. Deputy General Manager, Ding Chang-Jie of Compal Electronics even joined to impersonate the grandpa from a Japanese animated series “Little Maruko-chan,” making students burst into laughter. The launching ceremony is indeed filled with a joyful and artistic atmosphere.

Compal Electronics not only donated books but also 20 Bright IoT smart desk lamps that can offer wireless charging for cell phones. These lamps will serve readers in 10 rural library branches, illuminating the libraries and catering to the reading needs of the students.
