【Reported from Kaohsiung】On the Chinese Calendar, the year 2025 is marked as the joyous year of the fortune-bringing Snake. In celebration of the new year, the Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) specially invited Director Fong-Ji Cai (蔡豐吉) and his team of professional calligraphy experts from the Taiwan Calligraphy Association of Kaohsiung City to the Kaohsiung Main Library on January 18. On that day, the guests assisted KPL in holding the “Spring Coupletsss for a Sssnake Year of Happinesss” event at the Main Library’s Picture Book Plaza on the B1 Floor. Visitors who borrowed up to 10 books from the library were given coupons that they could trade for a special Chinese New Year’s gift. Visitors may choose from a selection of spring couplets, auspicious phrases, or a piece of Doufang red paper. KPL encouraged all citizens to join in on the Chinese New Year’s celebrations.

KPL Director Chin-Yang Lee (李金鴦) remarked that KPL’s event of sharing spring couplets for a certain number of borrowed books has always been a popular and well-received activity. During this time of the year, many citizens could be seen leaving the library with an armful of books and a spring couplet for good luck in the new year. 2025 is the year of the Golden Snake, symbolized by a charming golden python said to bring wealth and fortune. Moreover, having professional calligraphers writing characters of good fortune at the scene presents an atmosphere filled with a powerful combination of art and culture. For years, KPL has been dedicated to fostering a culture of reading as a way to welcome fresh ideas and knowledge—an especially meaningful practice at the start of a new year. Reading grants one the opportunity to enrich themselves with both knowledge and wisdom. KPL is determined to continue its efforts to promote reading and hopes for bright, wonderful days in the Year of the Golden Snake.

A long line of citizens eagerly waited to receive their spring couplets as Director Fong-Ji Cai and his team of professional calligraphers from the Taiwan Calligraphy Association of Kaohsiung City skillfully wrote auspicious phrases for the Year of the Golden Snake. The characters formed the following wishes: “Sssmooth Sssailing Good Fortune” and “Read to Travel a Thousand Miles, May Your Days Be Full of Smiles.” These blessings extend to all aspects of life—family, love, and career—wishing everyone greater prosperity and happiness in the new year.. The event shared a venue with the New Snake Year Picture Book Exhibition. KPL organized the exhibition to promote traditional arts and stories and to deepen citizens’ appreciation of traditional arts and aesthetics.
