Freedom 250: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — The Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL), in collaboration with the Kaohsiung Branch Office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AITK), is hosting the “America 250 Traveling Exhibition” from April 6 to 24 at its Main Library. Marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, the exhibition pays tribute to generations of Americans and their contributions. To commemorate this milestone, AIT has specially curated the “America 250 Traveling Exhibition,” on display on the fifth floor of the Main Library. KPL is also presenting a book exhibition themed on “American Heroes.” Together, the events aim to highlight a shared future grounded in collaboration, innovation, and mutual respect.

KPL Director Lee Chin-Yang expressed appreciation for AITK’s long-standing support of the library. She noted that this traveling exhibition provides an opportunity for the public to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s important partner, the United States. The exhibition serves as a platform for cultural exchange, featuring both American and local cultural elements. Visitors are encouraged to explore history and broaden their perspectives through this exchange, while children are inspired to discover courage through stories and recognize that anyone can become a hero in their own life journey.

The “America 250 Traveling Exhibition” features a wide range of content, including photographs, quizzes, historical replicas, interactive displays, and cultural programs. Topics span American sports, literature, popular culture, music, and the arts. Interactive activities such as book clubs, panel discussions, and games are also incorporated. Through visual materials and historical narratives, the exhibition guides visitors in reflecting on the United States’ development in freedom, democracy, innovation, and cultural diversity. Attendees will also receive limited-edition postcards and stickers.

To enrich the exhibition experience, KPL has scheduled a series of special events on April 11. Branch Chief Neil Gibson of AITK officiated the opening of both the exhibition and the book display, and engaged families with lively storytelling sessions. In addition, speakers from The Fulbright Program will lead discussions on the development of diverse Asian communities in the United States, exploring how they have contributed to American society through cuisine, business, and community life. These talks aim to deepen public understanding of how Asian immigrants have shaped the multicultural character of contemporary American culture through cross-cultural exchange.

KPL also mobilizes its branch libraries in full support of the related programs. From April to June, branch libraries across the city will host the “American Heroes” book exhibition, each for approximately one month. Through book displays and reading promotion activities, the theme America 250 will continue to spread across the city, forming a connected, multi-branch reading campaign.

In recent years, Kaohsiung has deepened its engagement with the United States in education, culture, and urban exchange. Through diverse cultural programs and international collaboration, residents have gained greater exposure to global perspectives in everyday life. KPL expressed its hope that this exhibition and book display will position reading as a vital bridge to the world, enabling the public to engage with diverse cultures and histories within the library setting.
