As one of Taiwan's allies, St. Kitts & Nevis took practical actions to deepen the cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries and enrich the English collection of Kaohsiung Public Library.

The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis (St. Kitts and Nevis) is one of the countries on the Caribbean Sea, which has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In order to help the Kaohsiung citizens know more about this country, Ambassador Donya Lynex Francis donated six English books to Kaohsiung Public Library on March 27. The representative of Mayor Chen Chi-mai, deputy mayor Luo Da-sheng, attended the event, and the acting director of Kaohsiung Public Library Lin Yisheng received the book donation. The donated books depict this country's history and culture. Through reading, the two countries can have a better understanding of each other. It not only enhances the diversity of the book collection in English of Kaohsiung Public Library but also contributes to the promotion of English reading and our country's bilingual policy.

Mr. Luo Da-sheng thanked the ambassadors for their actions to deepen cultural and educational exchanges, increase Kaohsiung Public Library's collection, and enrich the bilingual learning resources of Kaohsiung City. It is hoped that with this as a starting point, in the future, Kaohsiung Public Library will become a partner of St. Kitts and Nevis Embassy in reading promotion and cultural exchanges in southern Taiwan and continue to maintain close cooperation to deepen the connection between St. Kitts and Nevis and Kaohsiung.

Wang Wen-cui, chairperson of Kaohsiung Public Library and director of general of Bureau of Culture Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government, said that last year St. Kitts and Nevis donated books to National Library and received positive feedback. This year, St. Kitts and Nevis decided to donate books to Kaohsiung Public Library, which has more than one million collections, in order to give the Kaohsiung citizens an opportunity to have a better understanding of the country. This book donation shows the friendship between the two countries, and it also corresponds to my country's 2030 bilingual education policy. After these donated books are collected, they can be borrowed from the B1 International Picture Book Center and the International Exchange Book Area on the 5th floor of Kaohsiung Public Library. In the future, there will be opportunities to bring these books to every corner of the city through the "English Mobile Library" of Kaohsiung Public Library for more people to read.

Donya Lynex Francis said that after taking office, he has actively participated in cultural and educational exchange activities and has given lectures to 5 schools. It is hoped that through the local stories written by the writers from St. Kitts and Nevis, their culture can be introduced to Kaohsiung citizens, and a wider range of resources for learning English can be provided to the local students in Kaohsiung to achieve the goal of bilingualization by 2030.

Kaohsiung Public Library said that the books include 3 children's picture books, namely My ABC Book About St. Kitts & NevisOma Lu's Visit, and The Masquerade Dance. The stories explain the history, tradition, and carnivals of St. Kitts & Nevis. The book Adventure at Brimstone Hill is suitable for middle school students to read about the adventure story of Iwo Jima, a world heritage site designated by the United Nations. Another two works were written by the well-known writer Caryl Phillips. The Final Passage tells the hard life of black people who left their African hometown, and A Distant Shore discusses the issue of individual and national identity, which was selected as the best novel of the year and shortlisted for the International PEN/Faulkner Award.
