The Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, Transportation Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government, and Kaohsiung Public Library jointly launched the "Reading and Traveling Together" project, and the picture book "Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" was published today. The book focuses on human-oriented transportation. The author group, led by the local picture book writers Liao Jianhong and Lin Xiusui, was the third-grade students of Hedi Elementary School. After 16 weeks of art courses, the group completed the book. What is special is that they participated in interactive reading and painting. The guests and school children painted the buildings, vehicles, and pedestrian walkways with colors on the enlarged pages of the cityscape around Love River and Kaohsiung Port. They all experienced the joy of picture book creation together.

"Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" was created through school art education. The Kaohsiung picture book authors led the students to brainstorm the outline of the story before imagining the scenes. The teachers said happily: "The children's pure vision and brushstrokes make the pictures very attractive !"  The most special thing is that the picture book is presented in a sketch style. There is only one little red bus in the whole book, leaving other blank objects for readers to color. The participatory reading is a relatively innovative approach.  Du Changlin, the principal of Hedi Elementary School, was deeply moved by the children, because they completely embodied the spirit of the 12-year new curriculum, which includes cross-domain learning such as writing, art, traffic safety, and life education.

Zhang Zhiming, the head of the Construction and Planning Agency, said that the picture book "Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" vividly depicts various road dangers from the perspective of children, and the playful scenes convey the message "Who is the master of the road"; When reading with parents, the correct concept of "public right of way" can be conveyed to children.

Chang Shuchuan, director of the Transportation Bureau, emphasized that the picture book "Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" started with field trips to introduce many famous scenic spots in Kaohsiung. Children accidentally discovered many road violations, mostly because adults did not obey traffic rules.  The book especially includes the memes (likes and shares on Facebook) of "Kaohsiung Youth Dream." The easy-to-understand and clear slogans and patterns instantly make the rigid traffic regulations lively.

Wang Wen-cui, chairperson of Kaohsiung Public Library and director-general of the Bureau of Culture Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government, said that Kaohsiung Public Library's (KPL) International Picture Book Center has the largest collection of picture books in Taiwan, and it is also an important base for supporting Taiwanese picture book writers. KPL Picture Books Sprouting Awards has become a key index in the field of picture book creation. Some writers have even won the Bologna Illustrators Award in Italy. It is hoped that in the future those picture book writers can create more picture books in different fields and with various themes.

Lin Yi-cheng, acting director of Kaohsiung Public Library believes that what's truly remarkable is that the authors of the picture book "Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" were created by the local picture book writers and school children. He hopes that this published picture book can be shared in public libraries across the country, which can inspire more stories on the theme of traffic safety. The Hedi Library branch simultaneously launched a themed book fair, and the main library held the lecture for "Little Traffic Master of Kaohsiung City" on April 30.
