(Kaohsiung) The Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) has launched over 50 reading activities for readers in both the main and branch libraries. The main library offers activities such as Youth Camp, A Night at the Library, and Information Literacy Cultivation Lectures and Workshops whereas branch libraries host events such as Inclusive Toy Talks, Theatrical Reading, American Culture Camp, and Literary Landscape Exploration. With these diverse programs, it is hoped that both adults and children will enjoy a relaxing and fulfilling summer vacation.

Director Wang, Wen-Tsui of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government expressed that libraries are the ideal learning place for individuals of all ages. KPL, both the main and branch libraries, has designed a series of summer activities for the students and families so that they don’t have to worry about wasting the summer vacation without learning anything. KPL has been closely connected with the community and is the best intellectual source for people of all ages. That’s why KPL has offered diverse activities during the summer so that people can find the best way to advance themselves during the summer in the libraries.

Acting Director of KPL, Lin, Yi-Cheng has announced over 50 summer reading events that KPL offers this summer, including lectures, camps, digital literacy programs, and theatrical activities. Among these activities, “A Night at the Library” has been highly popular. Parents would sign up their children every year. This year, KPL has hit a record-breaking registration number of over 200 participants. In addition, KPL’s International Picture Book Center (IPBC) also serves as a place for children to read. The IPBC accommodates the highest number of picture books in Chinese and foreign languages in southern Taiwan. In total, these books are written in more than 27 languages from 43 countries. It is hoped that students and children could find the most rewarding way to spend their summer by immersing themselves in reading.

The Youth Camp is an adrenaline-pumping camp organized by the KPL every summer. “Unlocking the Future” is the theme of the 7th edition of Camp in 2023. It encourages teenagers to foster independent learning capacities so that they take on future challenges in life. The camp kicked off on July 17, gathering an impressive array of speakers, featuring theater artist Jhang, Hao-Yu, famous director Lin, Jyun-Yang, writer Sie, Jin-Yu (Lorenzia), poets Ren Ming-Sin and Lin, Da-Yang alongside popular Outdoor/Adventure Show host Remy Gils. Youth Camp has a series of courses to help campers explore themselves, raise their awareness of various global issues, and cultivate independent thinking and information-processing abilities so that they have the courage to break boundaries and engage in free expression and communication.

This summer, KPL also designed 10 amazing lectures and workshops for the “Digital Literacy Lecture Series."  Chairman of Taiwan Public Television Service, Hu Yuan-Huie delivered a talk titled "Don't Get Led by Fake News: Skills for Identifying and Critical Thinking" from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on July 9th. In addition, Nomadni, an expert on Notion, will conduct a workshop on "Notion: Making Every Day Count in 2023! Get Things Done and Turn Dreams into Reality" from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on August 26th. All Kaohsiung citizens are invited to join experts to learn about their digital experience and become savvy digital citizens of the new generation.

Also, do not miss out on the “Inclusive Toy Storytelling” and “Theatrical Reading” sessions at the Da-Liao Branch library, available from now until August 26th, every Saturday morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. These sessions combine storytelling and inclusive toys to engage both parents and children in reading and make learning more interesting for children. “Children’s Theatrical Reading Camp” is also available at the Sin-Sing Branch from July 11th (Tuesday) to July 14th (Friday), from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The camp focuses on visually impaired children and teenagers, using sound and body language for performances. Children can learn storytelling techniques, practice vocal expressions, develop story adaptation abilities, and even learn scriptwriting and perform in a complete theater production.

The "American Culture Camp" will take place over two days on July 13th (Thursday) and July 14th (Friday), at the Gang-Shan Branch Library. This camp is open mainly for teenagers and aims to enhance their multicultural perspective and bilingual abilities through two days of immersive learning and group interactions conducted entirely in English. On August 19th (Saturday) and August 26th (Saturday), the Kaohsiung Literature Museum will lead the "Wandering: Dagang Tributaries" activity for teenagers to explore the gender landscapes and cultural scenes in the Yancheng District. This activity is an extension of the "2023 Kaohsiung Youth Literature Award" promotional events, jointly organized by the Kaohsiung Literature Museum and the Takao Renaissance Association. It will guide teenagers in exploring gender landscapes and cultural spaces in the Yan-Cheng District through site visits, fostering an awareness of creative non-fiction writing. This activity is divided into two sessions, including guided explanations of landscape concepts, gender landscape investigations, group discussions, and writing exercises.
