【Kaohsiung】Record-breaking visitors stormed the 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival on the first weekend with over 15,000 visitors. Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Main Library, KPL has been blessed with private-sector donations after becoming an independent administrative institution, as it promotes sustainable reading with businesses, foundations, and social groups. The 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival features donations from various companies and organizations, such as Olympis, Bafang Yunji International, Verizon Construction & Engineering, and the Rotary Club of Kaohsiung. These entities promote urban reading and host various reading activities with KPL, a sign that KPL was not alone over the past 10 years and that reading quality has improved drastically thanks to these donors.
Director Wang Wen-Tsui of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government, wants to thank businesses from various sectors for sponsoring KPL. Such sponsorship from the private sector allows KPL to organize multiple reading activities, many of which are growing larger in scale year by year. From the One-Million Book Collection Project when the Main Library was inaugurated in 2014 to the first Kaohsiung Reading Festival in 2022, private-sector donation has been a significant force behind KPL, encouraging KPL to refine reading promotion activities. KPL believes that such a charitable gesture will continue to expand and impact the city so that each citizen can enjoy reading.
According to Chairman Su Shu-Hsin of the Bafang Yunji Social Welfare and Charity Foundation, Bafang Yunji endeavors to uphold the spirit of altruism, sharing, and public welfare as it continues to donate funds to help schools in the remote region and children of low-income families. The foundation donated one million NT to the 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival, hoping to attract friends from all over the country to attend the reading festival and experience its magic.
A long-time exporter of high-end bicycles, Olympis CEO Lee Mei-Ching enjoys visiting museums, fine art museums, and libraries worldwide. She believes reading can expand our perspective and guide us through our lives, so her company has sponsored the Kaohsiung Reading Festival.
To show appreciation to business donors supporting various reading activities, KPL has linked its homepage with a reading platform with a vision emphasizing social welfare, CSR, and public-private collaboration. Every donor created a slogan illustrating their connection and determination to promote reading.
The 2024 Kaohsiung Reading Festival provides a feast for our five senses, carrying out a series of events, including book exhibits, book markets, lectures, special events, and comic exhibits. The last youth broadcaster camp will occur on November 16, and a local comedy, “Takao Comedy Bay," will perform in the B1 Studio of Taigi TV Station on November 17. Culinary writer Roger Kuo will meet with readers at an immersive bistro to talk about the food culture of Kaohsiung over the past one hundred years on November 18.
