KPL April Book of the Month “Silence in the Age of Noise: the Joy of Shutting Out the World”. Learn how to shut out the noise and discover your inner silence!

COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc in April, as a result, many events have been canceled and citizens are asked to stay at home as much as possible. This is a critical time against the spread of the pandemic. Last month, KPL recommended a book on our friendship with animals, and this month our recommended book is “Silence in the Age of Noise: the Joy of Shutting Out the World” by Erling Kagge. We hope, through reading, readers can find joy from shutting out the world as well as discover the true inner peace during this difficult time. In our promotion video, Director Lucia Lin from the Bureau of Cultural Affairs guides readers through various quiet corners of the library. With a demonstration by professional yoga instructors, we hope our citizens can discover their spiritual and mental balance.

The author Erling Kagge is a well-known Norwegian explorer who successfully completed an unsupported expedition to the South Pole by himself in 50 days. He is also the first explorer to complete the “Three Poles Challenges” (North Pole, South Pole, and Mt. Everest). During one of his speeches, he was asked by the audience: “What is silence? How can one obtain silence? Why is silence so important?” Mr. Kagge then tried to answer these three questions by discussing how to create our own “silence” from outside and inside. Mr. Kagge used 33 essays about daily-life to describe “silence”, an abstract, difficult to comprehend, yet necessary element of life. Since we live in a world full of “noise”, the author emphasizes that as long as one can shut out the noise from us, then one can achieve true comfort and embrace one’s own life.

In order to enable our citizens to understand the power of silence, our promotion video for April features Director Lucia Lin of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs guiding viewers through various quiet corners of the library. KPL also invited a professional yoga instructor to demonstrate the beauty and strength of yoga in the library's sky garden. The entire video is presented in a relaxing format without any dialogue to allow viewers to experience and discover how to shut out the noise in their daily life and achieve inner silence.

KPL will continue to promote wide-scale reading as part of the vision of Mayor Han. Each month, we organize an essay contest, which is divided into two groups: working professionals and students. Prize number also increased from 12 to 42. We encourage citizens to spend more time reading and stay at home while submitting book reviews to win prizes. Entries from individuals who work or study in Kaohsiung are welcome. Please visit our official website for more information.
