[NEWS] KPL Officially Launched "iReading@KPL"

To respond to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaohsiung Public Library (KPL) has made efforts to provide innovative services to patrons. Today, KPL is proud to announce that the self-funded reading platform "iReading@KPL" ( is officially launched. E-books with a higher using rate between 2019 and 2021 will be provided, including 1,052 books of 58 types. Readers can choose to read the e-books on the website or with an app. In addition to reading online, readers can also download the e-books to their personal computers or tablets during the loan period. In other words, elementary school students in Kaohsiung City can read these books anytime anywhere.

"iReading" was originally a digital platform designed specifically for elementary school students in Kaohsiung City for autonomous learning and online reading challenge games. A reading list of books selected by experts, scholars, and teachers was made available on the platform. These books were divided into different levels and students can answer questions designed by teachers in the reading challenge games. It is an important platform for Kaohsiung to promote reading and encourage students to develop reading habits. In the past, school libraries in elementary schools would purchase books recommended on the platform annually to promote reading activities on campus. However, during the summer and winter vacations when school libraries were closed, parents and students would turn to KPL to borrow these books. Hence, KPL raised money to purchase more books in an attempt to meet students' demands. So far, KPL has purchased over 35,000 books specifically for "iReading". Nonetheless, during the summer and winter vacations, it was still difficult for libraries to meet the needs of over 100,000 elementary school students in the city. This time, right before the summer vacation, KPL has launched "iReading@KPL" so parents and students can enjoy the service in the comfort of their own homes.

As a public library, KPL strives to serve readers of different ages and people from different groups. Despite the fact that KPL has a limited budget, the establishment of iReading@KPL can certainly help to serve the needs of different readers. Each e-book has 26 or 30 copies available online to be borrowed and readers can choose to read online or with an app. If readers choose to use the app and download Hyread, they can also try the option to listen to the audiobooks. The app also provides an underline function to help readers learn better. KPL has prepared instruction manuals for first-time readers to use the platform online or use the app to access the books.

With a library card, a patron can borrow one book at a time and the loan period of each e-book ranges between 2 to 5 days. For more details, please visit the official website of KPL.
